T-shirts 101

V&A London: September 2014 - March 2015

The T-shirt is the world’s most ubiquitous garment, produced by both high street stores and haute couture houses. 2014 marked 101 years since the T-shirt’s official recognition as outerwear, by the United States Navy in its uniform regulations, and this display in the V&A fashion galleries drew from the extensive collection of T-shirts in the V&A’s collections. Alongside the t-shirt’s evolution from underwear to outerwear, the display explored the role it has played in subculture, street culture, politics and art.
